DAY 8: From Sickness To Savory

1 09 2009

I was up at 4 AM throwing up, and after a few trips to the bathroom I realized that I wasn’t going to make it through work.  In fact, I slept and spent time in the restroom most of today.  At 6:30 PM, I managed to pull my act together enough to go to my first culinary class at the Glass Bazaar.  I paid for it, so I needed to go.  I almost turned the car around though, cause I thought I was going to toss my cookies when I was driving to class.  When I got to class I settled down tummy wise and was in for a treat.

The culinary classes at the Glass Bazaar are more in the vein of watching a show like Emeril Live, you get taught by the chef du jour and their sous chef and then you get to sample the treats.  Good menu for the evening!  We were taught by the super cute and very sweet, Carol Scott who has quite an interesting story on how she arrived in Knoxville from being born and raised in Las Vegas (check out her bio here); and her assistant chef was Brian who was hyper cool, could talk LOVE park skateboarding with me (briefly), and they both were very generous in their explanations as well as their offerings of assistance.  For example, I got some good pointers for finding ingredients I may need for future recipes (i.e. pork lard, duck fat, etc.).  They are residents at Bravo! and Crown & Goose respectively and highly recommended – good folk, and good chefs.  We learned how to make Sweet and Spicy Grilled Shrimp, Rose Sangria (so glad to learn how to make good Sangria), Carne Asada Tacos with Fresh Mojo and Pico De Gallo and Ambrosia (a dessert I’ve never had before).  I think I’m going to make my hubby those Carne Asada Tacos this weekend – my live in guinea pig.

Only problem today was that I didn’t stick to my WW plan – it was hard because I didn’t eat anything until right before the class.  I will get back on board tomorrow.  I also took a night off my German lessons so I could watch Dance Your Ass Off,  but I plan on getting back on track with that as well.  I do foresee a problem coming up this week though.  A birthday dinner for a dear friend on Thursday night, that I can either attempt to plan ahead for or not worry about it.  Still haven’t decided which frame of mind I’m going for.  We shall see.

Still trying to keep my stomach in line.  It’s been a little fussy tonight, and I’m sure the cooking class didn’t help.  Either way, I recommend checking out the Glass Bazaar – good stuff!
