WOMEN of WORTH

This page will be dedicated to women I find worthy of learning “something” from.  None of them are perfect people, which I admire most but there are aspects of these women that I find so important that I wanted to share them with you.  In alphabetical order (first name) not order of importance.

PERSONAL HEROES

Shirley (My Mom)…thoughts coming soon.

Anna (My Babba)…my namesake and one of the strongest women I’ve ever met.

Mary (My Babba – Great Grandmother)…the matriarch and the woman who survived more than I wonder if I ever could and passed away at the age of 103.

BEATRIX POTTER

BEATRIX POTTER

From Wiki> Helen Beatrix Potter (28 July 186622 December 1943) was an English author, illustrator, mycologist and conservationist, who was best known for her children’s books which featured animal characters, such as Peter Rabbit.

From Me> If you go on the glossy image presented by the 2006 movie, Miss Potter; she’s a woman of independent mind and talent who was born into a well-to-do family and yet managed to branch out on her own and become one of the most beloved children’s book writers of her time.  Add to that her amazing conservation work and her tenacity for doing things against the grain and to the chagrin of her parents, I find myself very much impressed by her life indeed…so much so, that I’m attempting to convince my husband to use Beatrix as a middle name if we have a daughter.  Seriously.

BETTIE PAGE

BETTIE PAGE

From Wiki> Bettie Page (April 22, 1923 – December 11, 2008)[2] was an American model who became famous in the 1950s for her fetish modeling and pin-up photos. She was also one of the earliest Playmates of the Month for Playboy magazine.

From Me>  If you consider this woman who looked so “all-american-with-a-twist”, who lived her life without regret and free from the constraints that women often place on themselves in terms of sexuality and senuality (or at least the hang-ups).  She lived a pretty vanilla life, but was sure saucy on the side and a true icon of intrigue.

DANA OWENS (QUEEN LATIFAH)

QUEEN LATIFAH

From Wiki> Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970),[1] better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper, singer, CoverGirl and actress. Latifah’s work in music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Image Awards, a Grammy Award, six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination.

From Me>  A true vision of a strong, dynamic, triple-threat, thick woman…I have been so impressed with her acting choices and her introduction into musical theatre (on the big screen).  She’s one of my true icons in terms of being responsible with your size and remaining healthy.  She is just simply amazing.

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

From Wiki> Diane von Fürstenberg (born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin on December 31, 1946, Brussels, Belgium) is a fashion designer best known for her hallmark wrap dress.

From Me> Diane is my style icon.  Timeless and innovative use of prints, she embodies a sense of European style that I think is classic, sexy and sophisticated.  If you’re going to learn from any style icon, I seriously encourage you to take a look at her body of work, it’s mezmerizing and she’s stunning too.  If I can look like her at her age, I’d be a very happy woman.

ELAINE STRITCH

ELAINE STRITCH

From Wiki> Elaine Stritch (born February 2, 1926)[1] is an American actress and vocalist, known for her trademark performance of “The Ladies Who Lunch” in Company and her one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty.

From Me>  A life filled with choices that I have not made, and yet a woman who can command my attention with every story she tells in her one woman show.  Elaine has a wit, and zing that few woman seem to embody.  She’s a musical icon of the first degree.  She’s got a panache that I would envy at her age and highly recommend anyone delving into her performances…she’s top notch to me.

EMMA THOMPSON

EMMA THOMPSON

From Wiki> Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959) is an Academy Award-, Emmy Award-, BAFTA Award- and Golden Globe-winning British actress, comedian, and screenwriter. She is also a patron of the Refugee Council.

From Me> An actress of the highest caliber in my opinion with such range (drama to comedy), and sensational screenwriting abilities she was the original choice for my first name of a baby girl (but our cousin already claimed it to phooey).  I had no idea that our birthdates were only a day apart, but she is a class act and a woman of dynamics that I think is someone worth admiration.  Even if Kenneth didn’t fully appreciate her.

JILL SCOTT

JILL SCOTT

From Wiki> Jill Scott (born April 4, 1972) is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter, poet, and actress. In 2007, Scott made her theatrical debut in the films Hounddog (as Big Mama Thornton) and in Tyler Perry’s feature film, Why Did I Get Married? That same year her third studio album, The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3, was released on September 25, 2007. She has won three Grammy Awards.

From Me>  Have you heard this aries sing?!  Wholly hell people…smooth as silk and yet another fine example of a woman who embraces her size with style and elegance.  Plus, her smile can light up a room.  I’ve been told the same (awww shucks).

MO’NIQUE

MO'NIQUE

From Wiki> Mo’Nique Imes (born December 11, 1967) ,best known as her stage name Mo’Nique, is an American comedienne, actress, and reality television hostess. She is also the main hostess of the BET Awards.

From Me>  You’d think that I was African American wouldn’t you?!  Well, I have learned from the three African American women I have featured that embracing a size other than zero can be quite amazing and stunning.  In fact, Mo’Nique’s Phat Girls and FAT Chance have been inspirational to me.  Plus, she can be as funny as hell if you can deal with a couple of four-letter words.  Seriously, unapologetic and amazing.

RITA HAYWORTH

RITA HAYWORTHFrom Wiki> Rita Hayworth (October 17, 1918 – May 14, 1987), born Margarita Carmen Cansino, was an American actress and dancer who rose to stardom in the 1940s as the era’s leading sex symbol. She is listed as one of the American Film Institute’s greatest stars of all time.

From Me>  My Goddess model of dance and red-hair (although she was also not a natural redhead).  She is, to me, the most beautiful woman that Hollywood found and that’s saying something.  Plus, she married a hunky (when he was young, not doing Paul Mason commercials), Orson Welles and then a Prince.  Not too shabby.

More coming soon…
